The Zamfara State House of Assembly has directed the setting up of an investigative panel to probe the allegations levelled against the Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu Gusau.

Recall that members of the Assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings against Gusau over allegations of insubordination, abuse of office, and criminal self-enrichment.

The lawmakers, on Monday, announced they have served the Deputy Governor the notice of proceedings against him in a letter through the Secretary to the State Government.

During its extraordinary plenary on Thursday, the House unanimously directed the state Chief Judge, Justice Kulu Aliyu, to set up an investigative panel to probe the allegations levelled against Gusau.

The House agreed that the Deputy Governor be investigated for breaching sections 190 and 193 (1), (2) (a)(b)(c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

18 members, who were present at the plenary, out of the 22 members of the House, voted in favour of the motion and no member voted against the impeachment motion.

The only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker representing Zurmi East, Salihu Usman, was not present at the plenary.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had in November last year restrained the Zamfara Assembly from any move to impeach the Deputy Governor.

Naija News reports that State Governor Bello Matawalle and his Deputy fell out in July 2021, after Matawalle defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) but Gusau remained in the PDP.
