2023 Election: Official List Of House Of Representatives As Confirmed By INEC

Nigerians are reacting to the House of Representatives adoption of the bill seeking to confer citizenship rights on foreigners married to Nigerian women.

The existing law only allows citizenship to be conferred on women married to Nigerian men.

The committee adopted the bill following its presentation by consultants working with the lawmakers on the amendment of the document.

One of the consultants, Joy Ezeilo said the former condition was discriminatory against women.

The bill is potentially another move for women towards equality in Nigeria.

However, Nigerians do not show much enthusiasm towards the bill.

Below are some comments culled by Naija News from social media.

Ensamy; “Wrong move, many Onyinbo that come to do business here in Nigeria will misuse it . Fly into Nigeria like today and the next day pick a girl around ikoyi registry , get married and jet out of Nigeria. Next time come and set up construction, mining, logistics etc companies with low or no tax as a Nigerian citizen. Shocked shocked.”

Timoleon; “Advantages of being a Nigerian citizen? Taaaa! Even the Nigerian women aren’t marrying the foreign nationals so that their husbands can become Nigerians. The women are marrying to aid their escape from Nigeria and to become nationals of a country other than Nigeria.”

Adefemi007; “What are the advantages of being a citizen of Nigeria in the first place?”

Inoki247; “Lol so if a foreigner marry person she go turn Nigerian automatically. We wey b Nigeria abg wetin b d Advantage… Bkuz me I neva see the advantage of been a Nigeria wey u say mak anoda person come become citizen, Country wey don full already wey we no see d resources share u wan come add to it….”

Penguin2; “This is what feminists should be expending their energy on; not teaching women to learn karate and be kicking their spouses.”
