Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has announced his preferred successor ahead of the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Naija News learned that the governor announced the Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Umo Eno, as his successor at a meeting on Sunday night.

In a chat with The Nation, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ekerete Udo, said Eno was unveiled during the meeting with some selected leaders and stakeholders held at the Governor’s Lodge.

Udo disclosed that Eno was unveiled by the former state governor, Victor Attah after thorough deliberation, adding that the decision was taken by stakeholders made up of Senators and House of Representatives members.

The governor’s spokesman, however, denied claims that there were some dissenting voices at the meeting on the choice of Eno as the next governor.

He said: “The Governor announced that he (Eno) was the one God has revealed to him as the next Governor of the state and he was unveiled to all the stakeholders from the three senatorial districts of the State by the former governor, Obong Victor Attah, who then commended the choice.

“It was an array of the political elders made up of Senators and House of Representatives members.

It was learned that former Governor Victor Attah and some influential church leaders in the state reportedly influenced the governor’s preference for the Commissioner.

According to the Nation, the announcement reportedly caused a rift in the State Executive Council with some Commissioners nursing governorship aspiration very uncomfortable with the development.

Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary, Onofiok Luke said to be eyeing the governorship in 2023 reportedly stormed out of the meeting after the announcement.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Iniobong Ememobong and his Economic Development and Ibom Deep seaport counterpart, Akan Okon were reportedly absent at the meeting.
