The ongoing 2021 African Cup of Nation, AFCON, in Cameroon is gradually coming to an end as the tournament is about to enter into the quarter-final stage.

Six teams that have made it to the quarter-final stage are Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Gambia.

Naija News understands that Senegal and Morocco battled their way into the AFCON last eight on Tuesday, beating Malawi 2-1, after Senegal had defeated Cape Verde 2-0.

Recall that Tunisia, Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Gambia have since qualified for the AFCON last-8

The remaining AFCON round of 16 fixtures will be played on Wednesday.

The AFCON quarter-final stage will begin this weekend, Naija News reports.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has reacted to the elimination of the Nigerian football team from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Recall that the Super Eagles were eliminated from the tournament after losing 1-0 to Tunisia on Sunday night.

Tunisia qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament, following Youssef Msakni’s second-half strike.

Iwobi was sent off during the match while Goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye was condemned for allowing Msakni’s shot to get past him.

The Everton midfielder in a post on his Instagram account on Tuesday promised Nigerians that the team would bounce back from the defeat.

He wrote: “Moments of joy can quickly turn into pain and anguish. As much as it’s a part of football, we came for more.

“Our fans who shared these moments with us both in Cameroon and across the world deserved more!

“The beauty of the game is the next moment of jubilation is never too far around the corner.

“We will be back to fight for our nation, stronger. We owe it to you, and I owe it to myself. Thank you for all the words of support & encouragement – it doesn’t go unnoticed,” Iwobi said.
