AFCON: Okoye, Iwobi Receive Death Threats After Super Eagles Exit

Some footballer fans in Nigeria have begun to send death threat messages to Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye and midfielder, Alex Iwobi, after the country’s exit from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles were thrown out of the competition after Youssef Msakni scored the only goal of the clash with a strike from 25 yards out.

Some footballer fans believe Nigeria’s shot-stopper should have done better to save the ball, while others attacked Iwobi who got a red card after playing six minutes on the pitch.

An Instagram user had written under the picture posted by Okoye, “It will not be well with you. I pray you don’t see next month, you will die in a plane crash.”

Another user who was not pleased also wrote, “Maduka, you will not live long. You sold this AFCON match to the Tunisians.”

This development saw Okoye restrict comments on his Instagram handle, while Iwobi deleted all pictures on his page.

The Everton midfielder had previously deactivated his Twitter following the online abuses.
