NSCIA Commitee Chair, Sheikh Ibrahim Loses Eldest Son- Buhari Reacts

The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari on Monday reacted to the defeat of the Super Eagles on Sunday in the hands of their Tunisian counterpart at the ongoing AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon.

It will be recalled that the Nigerian senior football team suffered a shock 1-0 defeat which ended their AFCON campaign as they could not proceed to the quarter-final stage.

Reacting to the development, President Buhari in a statement on Monday evening which was signed by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said the team didn’t live up to expectations.

He however commended both the players and officials for putting up a good fight despite the eventual loss and early exit from the competition.

Buhari warned that no one should write the team off as he believes they can do better in the future particularly as they get ready for the important world cup play-off against Ghana.

According to the President, “although the team did not live up to our expectations in the tournament, both officials and players deserve commendation for the tough fight they put up.”

“They gave everyone the confidence that they were up to it, and I am sure it was something they could have achieved. Nonetheless, we should not write them off.”

The President directed the football authorities in the country to undertake a critical assessment on the Eagles’ performance at the Cup of Nations tournament and encouraged the general public to send their suggestions to the Nigeria Football Federation so that it will reflect and plan well for a better outing in the forthcoming World Cup competition.
