Mutinying Soldiers Allegedly Detain Burkina Faso President, Kabore

Mutinying soldiers have reportedly detained the President of Burkina Faso, Roch Kabore, amid reports of a coup d’etat in the country.

Multiple security sources that spoke about the development on Monday disclosed that Kabore is being held by the soldiers.

The Burkina Faso President was detained after reports of gunfire around his residence on Sunday night in the capital of Ouagadougou.

The government on Sunday had denied that the military had taken overpower.

The whereabouts or the situation of things could not be ascertained as of Monday morning, due to conflicting reports circulating among security and diplomatic sources.

It was gathered that armoured vehicles of the presidential fleet, riddled with bullets, could be seen near the president’s residence.

Residents of the president’s neighbourhood disclosed that heavy gunfire was heard on Sunday night as one of the cars was spattered with blood.

There had been an outcry in recent times over the frequent killing of civilians and soldiers by militants, some of whom have links to the Islamic State and al Qaeda.

Angry citizens who protested on Sunday in support of the ransacked the headquarters of Kabore’s political party and set it ablaze.

The government declared a curfew from 2000 GMT to 0530 GMT until further notice and closed schools for two days.

This is coming after the military took over power in Mali, Guinea and Chad.
