Unknown gunmen suspected to be bandits have reportedly killed five people in a recent attack in Niger State.

The victims according to reports include three personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and two local vigilantes.

Naija News understands that the security men were killed on Monday during a gun duel with the assailants who ambushed them in Kwanan Dutse, Mariga Local Government Area of the state.

Confirming the incident to newsmen in Minna, the state capital on Tuesday, the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Bala Kuryas who spoke on a telephone interview, said that the incident happened at about 4 p.m when the Joint Security TaskForce, comprising the police and the local vigilantes were on routine patrol of the area.

Kuryas told journalists that the security group equally neutralised the gunmen during the gun battle that lasted for hours.

He said: “The exchange of gunfire between the gunmen and the Joint Security TaskForce led to the killing of three policemen and two local vigilantes while others sustained various degree of injury.”

The police boss recalled that the Joint Security Taskforce on Sunday morning foiled an attack by another group of gunmen after about two hours of gun battle at Beri village, along Tegina-Kontagora road.

According to him, the detachment of police tactical squad and the military have been deployed to the area and have lunched a manhunt with the view of tracking down the criminals.

“We appeal to residents to assist security personnel deployed with reliable information that could aid in apprehending miscreants.

“We are all out to deal with any person or group of people undermining the peaceful atmosphere our area,” the commissioner said.
