Police Officer In Trouble For Shooting Trailer Driver In Gombe

The Gombe State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended its personnel who reportedly shot at a trailer driver during an operation on Monday.

Naija News learnt that the police inspector who was on duty on Monday morning fired a shot at a driver driving past the Police checking point along Dukku-Darazo road.

The victim, Abdullahi Bello reportedly sustained injuries on his buttock and was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Confirming the incident a statement made available to newsmen hours after, the police command through its Public Relations Officer, SP Obed Mary Malum, said the officer in question has been arrested and is under interrogation at state CID.

The police statement reads: “The Gombe Police Command under the leadership of CP Ishola B. Babaita, wishes to inform the general public over the unfortunate incident that happened today, January 17, 2022, at about 0630hrs at Gombe-Abba Police nipping-point along Dukku-Darazo road while conducting stop and search.

”AP/no. 204365 Inspector Urbanus Ishaku attached to 34 PMF Gombe, shot a trailer driver, one Abdullahi Bello ‘m’ of Bauchi State.

“As a result, he sustained an injury on his buttock, the victim was rushed to FTH Gombe where he is currently receiving treatment and he is in a stable condition,” she said.

Malum explained further that disciplinary action will be taken against the suspect soon as the command is done investigating the incident.

She added: “The Commissioner of Police wishes to enjoin all the peace-loving citizens of Gombe State to stay calm as the police will not tolerate any act of indiscipline from any police officer.

“Any policeman caught in reckless use of his firearm will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law please,” the statement warned.
