Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) is set to meet with governors, traditional rulers and other groups in the region on Saturday, January 15.

Naija News reports that the Secretary of NEF Organizing Committee, Abdullahi Usman Toro, made this known in a statement issued on Thursday night. He said that the meeting will take place at Arewa House, Kaduna.

Toro stated that some of the issues that will be deliberated in the meeting include the rising insecurity in the North, the economic and political fortunes of the region and its relationship with other regions of the country.

He, however, disclosed that the forum fixed the meeting on January 15 to remember the day the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello and other Nigerians were assassinated in 1966.

The statement reads: “A number of Northern Groups and individuals, including Northern Elders Forum, have planned to hold a meeting of Northern leaders of thought on Saturday, January 15 2022 at Arewa House, Kaduna.

“The meeting will be a rare platform without partisan or religious tilt, which will examine the state of the North and its relationship with the rest of Nigeria. It is planned to encourage the development of ideas and recommendations that will improve the region’s state of security, economy and political fortunes.

“January 15 is significant in Nigerian history because it was the date the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello and many other Northerners and other Nigerians were murdered by military elements in 1966.

“Arewa House accommodates the official residence of the late Sardauna of Sokoto. A communique will be released after the meeting.
