Police Warn Against Protest Over Sylvester Oromoni’s Death, Threatens Arrest

The Lagos State Police Command has warned residents against staging any protests over the late Sylvester Oromoni, who died under controversial circumstances.

Naija News reports that Oromoni died on November 30, 2021 after he was allegedly assaulted and given a harmful substance to drink by bullies in his school, Dowen college.

Following his death, the Lagos State government had shut down the school detaining five students and five school staff.

However, the Nigeria Police Force later released the school’s House Master and other students arrested in connection with the alleged murder.

This caused outrage, sparking protests in front of the school on Thursday, January 6, 2021.⁣

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, January 7, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, warned that such demonstrations will not be tolerated in the future.⁣

⁣He said, “Much as we commiserate with the bereaved family on the death of their lovely and promising child, it is advised that the protesters and other individuals or groups who are still aggrieved should go to law court to seek redress instead of taking the law into their own hands.⁣

“Thus members of the public who may have any misgivings about the outcome of the police investigation, medical enquiry and legal advice with this case are advised to follow due process in law rather than resorting to self-help.⁣

“The police will not fold their arms and allow any act or omission that could threaten the peace being enjoyed in the state.”⁣

Despite the DPP’s ruling, a coroner’s inquest into Oromoni’s death will commence on January 15.⁣

His family has rejected the findings of the Lagos state government, demanding the intervention of the President and IG of Police.⁣
