Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has told the Kano State Hisbah Board that Shatu Garko has not contravened any cultural standards in the North.

The former lawmaker who warned the Hisbah board to leave her alone stated that she was modestly dressed while participating in the Miss Nigeria beauty peagent.

Sani added that the board has in the past failed to go after daughters of the rich and powerful who flagrantly contravened cultural and religious standards.

Taking to his Twitter account, he wrote: “Ms Shatu Garko contested Miss Nigeria pageant decently dressed. She has not crossed the line of our cultural standards here in the North. There are the daughters of the rich and the powerful that have done that with impunity. I appeal to the Hisbah religious authorities to let her be.”

Naija News recalls that the 18-year-old Garko was crowned the 44th Miss Nigeria last week Friday and became the first-ever hijabi to win the pageant.

But the Kano State Hisbah Board revealed it is set to invite the parents of the newly crowned Miss Nigeria, Shatu Garko over her participation in the pageant.

The Hisbah Commander, Sheik Ibn Sina, made this known in a chat with BBC News Pidgin on Tuesday.

The Sharia police boss said Mr. and Mrs. Garko will be invited to come and explain the reason behind their daughter’s participation in the beauty pageant.

Sina disclosed that it is a sin and forbidden for anyone to contest in any beauty contest under Islam. Sina added that Kano is a sharia state and this is the reason the board will be inviting the Garkos.
