Former President Goodluck Jonathan has disclosed that the raid on the home of Supreme Court judge, Justice Mary Odili, could have been averted.

The former Nigeran leader stated that the information given by a whistleblower which led to the invasion of the home of the Supreme Court judge should have been verified.

Jonathan called for the immediate review of the whistleblower policy, saying the modification of the policy will curb such embarrassment in the future.

He made this known when he delivered the graduation lecture at the National Institute for Security Studies in Abuja on Thursday.

Jonathan stated that any information given by the whistleblower should be properly checked before security operatives go on to initiate a raid.

The former Nigerian leader, however, called for stiffer punishment for people who give wrong information to the security operatives.

Jonathan said: “The concept of whistleblowing helps to give information, but that information should be slightly investigated and you need to be sure before you strike. It should be modified so that the security operatives don’t go into the voice of discoveries.

“If things are not done properly, people will exploit it to their advantage. People, who give wrong information to the security operatives, should be punished. As much as whistleblowing is okay, it will help to control us. It must be done in a way that will not injure our economy.”

It will be recalled that some alleged security operatives on Friday 29th October 2021 stormed the Maitama home of the Supreme Court Judge in Abuja.

The suspected operatives were said to have gone to the judge’s home to execute a search warrant as part of investigations into her husband, Peter Odili, who is a former Governor of Rivers State.

The operatives, who came with a search warrant, said they received information on “illegal activities” going on in the house.

However, 15 suspects were arrested and paraded by the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly taking part in an illegal raid on the home of Nigeria’s second most senior judge.
