President Muhammadu Buhari has described the late Mukhtar Adnan as a politician who served selflessly without interest in amassing illicit wealth.
Buhari made the submission on Friday in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu in which he reacted to the death of the Kano kingmaker and former lawmaker.
It will be recalled as earlier reported by Naija News that Adnan, a former House of Representatives member in the First Republic, died on Friday at the age of 95.
Until his death, Adnan was the District Head of Dambatta and the Sarkin Ban Kano, making him one of the longest-serving kingmakers in the history of the Kano Emirate.
He participated in the selection of five Emirs before passing away on Friday.
His demise has caused Buhari to mourn with the President describing him as a “colossus with a remarkable record of service.”
The statement further quoted Buhari as saying “the Sarkin Bai Kano was an immense historical figure who loomed large in our political and cultural affairs.”
Adding that, “Mukhtar Adnan’s record of serving the Kano Emirate for 63 years and as a Chief Whip in the First Republic Parliament, qualifies him to be one of our greatest historical players and actors in the evolution of Nigeria.”
The President noted that “the Sarkin Bai participated not only in the selection of five Emirs in the Kano Emirate, but will also be remembered for his contributions in the development of our democracy.”
“I’m proud to say without any fear of contradictions that Mukhtar Adnan belongs to the golden age of our democracy when the main motivation for politicians was selfless public service rather than the desire to amass wealth. One of Wam Bai’s remarkable virtues was his tested and untainted integrity.”
