Amnesty International Slams Buhari Government Over Killings In South-East

Non-Governmental organization and human rights group, Amnesty International has condemned in its totality the recent killing of two policemen in the Southeastern region of Nigeria.

Naija News reports that President Muhammadu Buhari-led government had earlier accused the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, of executing two operatives of the Nigerian Police Force.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed in a statement released on Monday said the security outfit of IPOB, Eastern Security Network carried out the murder.

According to Mohammed, those behind the “killings, who videotaped their heinous act and circulated such will be apprehended and brought to justice”.

The minister described the murder of the security agents as horrific, barbaric and cannibalistic manner, as an unacceptable attack against the state.

Reacting to the development in a statement on its social media page on Wednesday, Amnesty Int’l urged authorities to ensure that those responsible for the act are brought to justice.

The human rights group berated the continuous attacks on security agencies in the South-East.

The statement read, “Amnesty International strongly condemns the horrific killing of two policemen in Anambra State which was recorded in a recent video circulating widely on social media. The abduction and gruesome killing of the two police officers clearly shows utter disregard for the sanctity of life.

“Amnesty International urges the Nigerian authorities to act swiftly to find those responsible for these horrific acts or persons suspected of responsibility for the gruesome killings and bring them to justice promptly.

“The killing of the two policemen and the frequent attacks targeting security agencies in the southeast is appalling.

“The authorities must initiate, and lead prompt, independent, impartial and effective investigations into the abduction and horrific killing of the policemen with a view to bringing criminal charges against all those reasonably suspected of responsibility.”
