Court Strikes Out Six Remaining Charges Against IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu

The Department of the State Services (DSS) has reacted to the alleged maltreatment of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in its custody.

Naija News had reported that the special counsel to IPOB leader, Aloy Ejimakor, had raised an alarm over the inhumane condition his client is subjected to in DSS custody.

In a statement on Thursday, Ejimakor alleged that DSS operatives have subjected Kanu to harsh, degrading and inhumane treatment in their detention.

He claimed that the IPOB leader is confined to a very tiny cell and denied access to sunlight and any social interactions.

Ejimakor said that Kanu had not changed his clothes or had access to his Jewish prayer shawls and other religious materials since his detention.

He said those who visit Kanu in custody are subsequently detained as punishment and detainees are confined for exchanging pleasantries with the IPOB leader.

But in an interview with The PUNCH on Thursday, DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunnaya, said the agency would not be making a statement on the allegations.

Afunnaya, however, asked Kanu’s lawyers to seek redress in court if the rights of their client has been violated.

He said, “The DSS is not likely to make any public statement on a matter that is subjudice. Besides, any aggrieved parties can seek redress as maybe appropriate in law.”

Meanwhile, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has condemned the alleged maltreatment of Kanu in DSS custody.

Ohanaeze gave the condemnation while reacting to the allegations raised by Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, that the IPOB leader is being subjected to torture and harassment in DSS detention.

Reacting to the allegations, the spokesman for Ohanaeze, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, warned the DSS against treating Kanu in an inhumane way and asked the secret police to stop such actions.
