Rohr Reveals Why Ighalo Was Benched Against Liberia

The head of the Nigeria national team, Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has disclosed why he benched Odion Ighalo in their match against Liberia on Saturday.

According to Rohr, the Super Eagles striker did not play over the weekend because he arrived late to camp.

The Al-Shabab striker is back in the national team after ending his international career almost three years ago.

Gernot Rohr had invited that striker for the final group games against Liberia and Cape Verde in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Recall that the Nigeria national team defeated Liberia 2-0 last weekend, with goals from the penalty spot from Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa.

Ighalo, however, did not feature in the clash and Rohr has disclosed that it was because he arrived at the camp on Thursday.

Rohr in his post-match conference said, “He only arrived on Thursday, that is why he could not participate in this match.

“But I hope the next match, he will be able to help us much more.”

In a related development, some countries have already booked their places in the FIFA 2022 World Cup games, after establishing unassailable leads in their various groups.

Apart from the host nation, Qatar which has an automatic slot, eight other countries have also confirmed their places in the Mundial.

After Sunday’s round of qualifying games, Croatia, Serbia, and Spain all booked their spaces in the upcoming tournament by defeating Russia, Portugal, and Sweden respectively.
