The week started in a tragic note with reports of the 21-storey building in Ikoyi, Lagos, which crumbled killing over 30 people.

Naija News had reported that the Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South-West Region, Ibrahim Farinloye, had said the death toll rose from 22 to 36.

Farinloye stated that three women and 33 men have been confirmed dead in the collapse, bringing the total death recorded so far to 36.

But in a swift reaction, Governor Sanwo-Olu dismissed the claim that 36 people have been confirmed dead in the sad incident.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday at the tragic scene, the governor said the record available to the state government shows that 32 persons have been confirmed dead as opposed to 36.

Anambra voters elect next governor

Residents of Anambra State on Saturday came out in their numbers to vote in the next governor to pilot the affairs of the state for the next four years.

Naija News reports that the major parties that josted for the state’s number one seat include the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP).

INEC is expected to declare one of Senator Andy Uba, Valentine Ozigbo, Charles Soludo and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as the winner of the election.

Billionaire businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu popularly known as Obi Cubana during the week honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Naija News learnt that Obi Cubana who arrived at the office of the commission in Abuja on Monday afternoon was questioned by operatives of the anti-graft agency.

A source disclosed that his case borders on alleged money laundering and tax fraud.

The socialite was later released by the anti-graft agency after days of intense grilling.

Gunmen attack UniAbuja, abduct many

Six people were kidnapped by unknown gunmen during an attack on the University of Abuja on Tuesday morning.

The University, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Habib Yakoob, said that the gunmen abducted a Professor of Economics in the institution, Joseph Obansa, alongside his two children.

He said the gunmen gained access to the Senior Staff Quarters at Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the early hours of Tuesday.

Yakoob stated that the gunmen operated undisturbed for over an hour, adding that security agents have since been deployed to track down the criminals.

But in a short statement signed by the FCT Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh, on Friday, the victims were rescued through a joint operation with other security agencies.

Adeh also disclosed that the suspected kidnappers have been arrested and would be charged to court soon.

She said: “The FCT Police Command wishes to inform members of the public that all abducted victims of the university of Abuja were rescued and reunited with their families through a joint operation with other security agencies”.
