Ikeja Leaking Gas Pipeline: NNPC Assures Residents Of Safety

Road construction and rehabilitation activities have been identified as the cause of gas leakage reported in the Anifowoshe area of Ikeja in Lagos State.

Naija News understands that residents of the area have been in panic understanding the danger they are being exposed to by the emission of the flammable substance.

Recall a gas pipeline leakage in the Ikeja area of Lagos State had been reported earlier prompting the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to warn residents against igniting an open fire.

However, the General Manager, Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Garba Deen Muhammad, in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday, November 3, appealed to residents of the area to be at peace while measures are being put in place to fix the damaged pipeline.

Muhammad noted in the statement that the company received reports of the leaking pipeline today and that the affected pipeline has been isolated and the general area cordoned off.

Reports revealed that the gas leakage started at about 8:40 am today around Anifowoshe, Ikeja Underbridge.

The affected pipeline according to preliminary findings is a 6-inch gas pipeline supplying gas to Mainland Power Ltd, near Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

The NNPC group upon receiving reports of the occurrence immediately moved in by engaging Gaslink Ltd, its franchise partner operating the pipeline, mobilized to the location, cordoned off the area and successfully isolated the gas pipeline at Oba Akran Valve pit.

“In the meantime, residents of the area are urged not to panic as all necessary safety measures have been put in place to avert any further escalation of the incident; while NNPC’s team of maintenance engineers are collaborating with Gaslink team at the site to ensure that gas supply services to areas affected by the incident resume within the next 48 hours,” the statement made available to Naija News noted.
