Ex-INEC Chair, Jega Says INEC Database Not 100% Safe From Hackers

A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Attahiru Jega has blamed Nigerian politicians for the footdragging on adopting electronic transmission of election results in the country.

The former INEC boss observed that the politicians don’t want electronic transmission because it will expose their selfish propaganda.

Jega who lambasted politicians in such a category, however, added that the traditional way of transmitting election results is already outdated and Nigeria must adopt the latest technology which can improve the credibility of its electoral processes.

He made his mind known during a recent national political summit in Abuja under the aegis of the National Consultative Front (NCF).

He said; “Transmission of election results has been one of the key areas in which reckless, unpatriotic, and self-serving politicians have undermined the integrity of the Nigerian electoral process.

“Bringing remarkable integrity to the Nigerian electoral process, therefore, would no doubt require the jettisoning of the traditional obtuse manual transmission of results, and its replacement with using appropriate technology with electronic transmission of results.”

In other news, the President, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, has stated that the Southeast cannot claim to be marginalised because they have held top positions in the nation.

According to the Arewa Youths National President, only the north-central can claim to be marginalised in Nigeria.

He stated that the Southeast have produced a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, and a former Senate President.

Shettima asked Southeasterners to hold their Governors, Senators and leaders responsible for the shortfall of infrastructure in their region.

“When they say they are being marginalized, I don’t understand how and where they are being marginalized,” he told Daily Post.

“They say it’s because they are not allowed to come into governance, can you stay behind and seek power? Is power something that you can just threat people, then get it?

“And if they are talking about being marginalized, what happens to the North Central? North central has never produced the number two person in the seat of governance, but the Southeast had. They had SGF and Senate President.

“The North central has gotten nothing since 1999 till date. If there is any region that has been marginalized, then it’s the North central and they have not agitated or killed anybody, or held the country to ransom. So what marginalization are they talking about, there is nothing like marginalization.

“Don’t they have the number of Senators required? Don’t they have Ministers, governors? So, why are they channelling their anger to the centre and not to their leaders? What are the governors doing with all the fundings they are getting?”
