Catholic's Pope Francis Reacts To Niger Republic Crisis

The head of the Catholic Church worldwide, Pope Francis, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the senseless killings of innocent Nigerian citizens.

During his Wednesday’s General Audience at the Vatican City, the Pope called on the Nigerian leader to guarantee the safety of all citizens across the country.

The Pope condemned the insecurity in northern Nigeria and expressed solidarity with Nigerians over the killing of over 30 people in Southern Kaduna Kaduna State last weekend.

The Catholic leader prayed for those who lost their lives in the attack and said he hoped the safety of citizens will be guaranteed.

He added that not only in Southern Kaduna were people being massacred, stressing that everywhere in the country is not safe.

Pope Francis, however, urged the Federal Government to provide adequate security for Nigerians in every part of the country.

“I learnt with pain the news of the armed attacks that took place last Sunday against the villages of Madamai Abun in Northern Nigeria.

“I pray for those who have died, for the injured and for the entire Nigerian population. I hope that the country always guarantees the safety of all its citizens,” he said.

Recall that bandits killed over 34 residents of Madamai and Abun communities in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna state

Eight people sustained injuries during the attack while about 20 houses were said to have been burnt by the bandits.

Confirming the attack to journalists, Rev. Father Michael Magaji of the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan explained that the armed men came to the villages in their large numbers.

Reacting to the attack, the Senator representing Kaduna South, Danjuma La’ah, lamented the continuous killing and destruction of properties of the people of Southern Kaduna.

La’ah noted that the people of Southern Kaduna have been experiencing series of attacks in recent times, where hundreds of people have been killed and those living have found themselves becoming Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
