I Am Not Against Tinubu But I'm Worried Buhari May Turn Out To Be More Progressive - Lukman

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Salihu Lukman, says the ruling party may collapse after the exit of President Muhammadu Buhari from Aso Rock.

Naija News reports that Lukman, Director-General of the Progressives Governors Forum, stated this in an interview on a programme on African Independent Television (AIT) on Wednesday.

Lukman said the APC needs to strengthen its internal democracy and its members must be committed to the party’s ideology for the party not to collapse after the 2023 elections.

He added that for APC to remain in power and viable, the national leadership of the party must guide its members towards fully embracing progressive ideals for the party.

Lukman noted that the organs of the party should be meeting regularly to make decisions that would drive the progress and stability of the ruling party.

According to Lukman, decisions by the party leadership should be well thought out and debated before they are taken.

He said, “There is the need for the party to be democratic which means that organs of the party should be meeting regularly to make decisions. When we talk about party supremacy, it is not the position of an individual leader that should serve as the supremacy of the party.

“For instance, the National Executive Committee wasn’t meeting, the only organ that was meeting was the administrative organ and it was difficult at that time to now say that the constitution of the party was being respected.

“The second issue is what we can call the ideological thrust of the party. This is the party that was envisioned to be progressive, what it means to be progressive has to do with the capacity to issue related matters of governance, politics and decisions in a way that is in the best interest of the people.”
