The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has on a thankful note, revealed how the United States government has helped in the fight against terrorism.

Buhari in his submission revealed that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism has received tremendous support from the American government.

He made the submission on Friday in New York when he met with the Permanent Representative of America to the United Nations, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

President Buhari highlighted the Super Tucano fighter jets sold to Nigeria by the USA and several trainings aimed at boosting the capacity of the military in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

He further told the US government official that in the fight against coronavirus pandemic, a special team was raised by the Federal Government, which in conjunction with states, educated people on safety methods, “and we are not doing badly vis-a-vis our population.”

He however called for more collaborative efforts in fighting the virus, noting that “so we all have to collaborate and work together.”

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield expressed her dissatisfaction with the recent military takeover in Mali and Guinea to which President Buhari replied that it is wrong for leaders to try and stay in office beyond the constitutionally allowed limit.

“I am surprised when people spend the maximum term possible, and then tinker with the Constitution, to stay longer.

“In Nigeria, we try to educate our people to appreciate the democratic system. Elections should be safe and secure, no coercion of any form. People should elect the people they want. That would grow democracy,” he said.

Buhari also expressed concerns about the challenges of climate change which in particular, he observed has negatively affected the fortunes of the Lake Chad Basin and the attendant economic activities.
