2023: Goodluck Jonathan ‘Gives Conditions’ To APC To Dump PDP

Published

JONATHAN

As politicians and stakeholders begin the game of Chess with the 2023 general election drawing nearer, many names are beginning to gain traction as likely candidates to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

One name that has come to stay permanently on the lips of Nigerians is that of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The former president has consistently been linked with a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Sources have now revealed that Goodluck Jonathan, who has constantly been on the move across the continent, gave the ruling APC certain conditions before making his move official.

The delay in his official cross-carpeting is reportedly due to government officials not meeting some of the conditions yet.

Top government officials close to President Buhari, who are keen to bring Jonathan to the APC, are set to conclude plans to receive the former president.

A Jonathan in the ruling APC will do harm to the presidential ambition of former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is currently the favourite to grab the party’s ticket.

A top source told SaharaReporters that the Buhari had started courting Jonathan since 2020 to bring him into the APC to run for the presidency and succeed Buhari.

And Jonathan, who is purportedly nursing a presidential ambition to complete two terms in office, an opportunity denied him by the APC in the 2015 presidential election, has agreed to play the game.

According to the source, Jonathan would find it difficult beating a wealthy Atiku Abubakar to grab the PDP ticket.

The former Nigerian leader may also have a tough time getting the opposition party’s ticket if Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Governor Nyesom Wike decide to run on a joint bid for 2023 presidency.

Jonathan is said to have given certain conditions to Buhari’s cabal which have yet to be fully fulfilled hence the delay in joining the ruling party.

About a year ago Jonathan started consulting with APC to see how he could join the party. Jonathan realised that his chances in PDP were slim due to Atiku’s influence and opposition posed by PDP leadership, including Wike who is interested in a joint ticket with Tambuwal,” the source said.

The source added, “Buhari and his cabal had decided to discard Tinubu and started courting Jonathan. Jonathan assisted APC candidate in his state to win election but a court squashed his victory before he could be sworn in.”

The source continued, “Buhari cabal knew Jonathan could only do one term, in fact only 2 years constitutionally. They also know Jonathan is a softie who won’t go after members of the current regime.

“But Jonathan insisted on one condition that monies and assets of his which were seized and frozen by the Buhari government should be returned including, those belonging to his wife, Patience. He told them he had no money and the cabal agreed that they would unfreeze his assets and bankroll him.

He has insisted that they must demonstrate good fate before he would take the plunge. And they have started to resolve some of the issues raised by Jonathan. For instance, one of his cousins $40 million was returned via two court rulings.”

Recall that in May 2019, an Abuja Division of the Federal High Court discharged and acquitted Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, of $40 million laundering charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge, Nnamdi Dimgba held that no credible evidence was adduced to establish the offence of money laundering against Azibaola.

The source, however, said the former President is due in the Gambia on a diplomatic assignment in the coming week and might take the plunge by joining the APC when he returns as there are speculations that his seized assets might have been released by then.

I think the Jonathan’s people were holding out for the release of monies seized from his fronts. Conversations were around the issue of monies frozen and all. The monies may have been released Buhari and the cabal have backed themselves into a tight corner. But fortunately, Nigeria has moved on from 2015. Jonathan has no base in the South-South.”

Naija News reports that the APC had said it would welcome the former President should he consider joining the party.

The National Secretary of the party, John Akpanudoedehe while speaking on Channels Tv said like every other new entrant, Goodluck Jonathan if he eventually joined APC, would enjoy the rights and privileges extended to all members of the party.

But Goodluck Jonathan in his reaction to the alleged plan to join the ruling party described the report as fake news

The spokesperson of the former president, Ikechukwu Eze said there is no truth in the defection rumours.

He added that his principal is very busy with other activities and should he decide to defect, it will be communicated through appropriate channels, and not the rumour mill.

Lagos PDP Congress

The Bauchi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has reportedly received the membership of one thousand people from different political parties in the state.

The defectors had joined the nation’s opposition party after renouncing membership of their former camps.

The defectors include members from the All Progressives Congress, APC, Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, all from Dass Local Government Area of the State, Naija News understands.

Receiving the defectors at a ceremony held at the Government Lodge in Dass, PDP chairman in the area, Alhaji Sani Korau, welcomed the defectors to the umbrella camp.

According to Korau, from the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1999, Dass was never in the opposition until recently as a result of certain reasons, which he said had been politically resolved.

The party local government chairman disclosed that the resolution of the issues had made it possible for PDP to experience the mass return of the former members back to the party.

On his part, while addressing the new members, PDP state deputy chairman, Bala Hadith, urged them to support the party for the betterment of the state and the country at large.

He stated that the PDP was not only a united party but also the most powerful political party in Africa.

Also in her address, the state Commissioner for Science and Technology, Maryam Garba Bagel, said the defection was a great development for PDP, saying that members needed to work hard for the party’s success in the state, particularly in Dass LGA given the good works going on in the state under the administration of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Muhammad.

Other speakers at the event congratulate the new members, urging the people of the local government area to continue to support PDP’s transformation efforts in the state and also continuously support Governor Mohammed for him to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

Those who spoke on behalf of the defectors from their respective parties submitted that they were motivated to defect to the PDP by the giant strides being recorded by the Governor Mohammed administration in the state.

The highlight of the defection of the ceremony was the burning of brooms, being the symbol of the ruling APC, by those who left the party to publicly renounce their former political party, Naija News understands.

Fintiri Reveals The President That Can End Boko Haram Insurgency In Nigeria

Published

PDP Consititutes National Convention Committee

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri has submitted that what Nigeria needs to end Boko Haram and other activities of insurgents is a President from the North East region.

He expressed confidence that within the first term of such a presidency, insurgency will become a thing of history.

The Governor made the submission on Thursday when he spoke at the 2021 North East Star Magazine awards where he was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Maxwell Gidado.

According to him, a President from the North East will understand the situation and will easily tackle the situation.

He alleged also that the Muhammadu Buhari administration didn’t give enough support to Lt.Gen Tukur Buratai when he was the country’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

“The Boko Haram insurgency will be wiped out in the first term of a president from the North East. It is a popular saying that he, who wears the shoe, knows where it pinches him. Lt. Gen. Buratai did his best when he was at the helm of affairs.

If he had been given 100 per cent support, I want to believe, he would have snuffed out the terrorists in Sambisa forest” Fintiri said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has identified the sponsors of the agitator for Yoruba Nation, Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, as it unraveled how Igboho got monies from 43 bank accounts, across nine banks.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, who made this public on Friday, reiterated President Muhammadu Buhari’s disclosure that one of Igboho’s sponsors is a serving member of the National Assembly.

Malami, while addressing a press conference in Abuja, disclosed that a committee set up by the Federal Government found out the sponsors of Sunday Igboho and uncovered how millions were pumped into the secessionist’s bank accounts.

Secondus Moves To Stop PDP’s National Convention

Published

on

The suspended National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has taken steps to stop the convention of the party.

The development was revealed in a letter dated 21st October 2021, and released through his lawyer, Tayo Oyetibo, SAN.

Secondus in the letter disclosed that an appeal has been filed at the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Judicial Division in respect to the case filed by one Mr Ibeawuchi E. Alex and four others jointly instituted Suit No PHC/2183/CS/2021.

The letter reads, “We act for the Appellant in the above-captioned matter, PRINCE UCHE SECONDUS, who was the National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), before the institution of Suit Number PHC/2183/CS/2021, and wish to bring to your attention the following facts:

“1. On 23 August 2021 one Mr Ibeawuchi E. Alex and four others jointly instituted Suit No PHC/2183/CS/2021 at the High Court of Rivers State, PortHarcourt Judicial Division against Prince Uche Seconds and the PP as Defendants.

“2. On 10 September 2021, the High Court of Rivers State delivered its judgment in the Suit whereby Prince Uche Seconds was, inter alia, restrained from performing the functions of the office of National Chairman of the PDP.

“3. An appeal has been filed and entered against the judgment at the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Judicial Division.

“4. In addition, an Application on Notice has been filed in which Prince Uche Secondus is seeking, inter alia, the following orders:

“i. AN ORDER of injunction restraining the PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY, the 6th Respondent herein, whether by itself, its officers, servants, agents and or representatives from holding or conducting it’s National Convention scheduled for 30th and 31st October 2021 or any other date, pending the hearing and final determination of this appeal.
ALTERNATIVELY TO I ABOVE

“ii. AN ORDER that the parties to this appeal, particularly the Appellant/Applicant and the 6th Respondent (Peoples Democratic Party) shall maintain the status quo ante as of 22 August 2021, when Appellant/Applicant was occupying the office of National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, pending the hearing and final determination of this appeal.

“5. The application has since been served on you and other Respondents in the appeal.

“6. Notwithstanding the service of the Application for an injunction, it has come to the Notice of our client that the PP and its officers continue to prepare to hold the National Convention on 30 and 31 October 2021.

“7. This letter is intended to draw your attention to the position of the law of Nigeria on this subject as encapsulated in the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in the celebrated case of GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE vs. CHIEF EMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU (1986) I NWLR (Part 18) 621 @ 637, in which the court, reviewed various decisions on the point, and approved the following principles as the correct position of the law, that is:

“The rule is well settled that where a suit is brought to enjoin certain activities of which the defendant has notice, the hands of the defendant are effectually tied pending a hearing and
determination even though no restraining order or preliminary injunction be issued.

“The conclusion to be drawn from all the cases is that after a defendant has been notified of the pendency of a suit seeking an injunction against him even though a temporary injunction be not
granted, he acts at his peril and subject to the power of the court to restore the status wholly irrespective of the merits as they may
be ultimately decided.

“8. The same position was taken by the Court of Appeal in CHIEF ELIAS OKEKE-OBA vs. IKWUKA OKOYE (1994) 8 NWLR (364) 605 @ 617-618, where the court said as follows:

“The general practice is that on the application for an order for interlocutory injunction, all activities affecting the res, ….are automatically terminated as a mark of respect to the court before whom the application is pending if parties to the suit senselessly rush their tortious trespassory activities…in the spacious belief that that would promote their unfounded claims to the res. Nothing can be farther from the truth. Such heedless posture is, to say the least, a fragrant disrespect to the court. It, in my opinion, amounts to intransigence for a party against whom an order for an injunction is sought to intensify his interference with the res. The court cannot be hoodwinked by such impropriety of unlawful acts about the res.……Nor can the person in such disrespect be allowed to take advantage of his default and flagrant intransigence.

“9. The logical corollary of the foregoing pronouncements of the courts is that having been
served with an application seeking to restrain the holding of its National Convention pending the determination of the appeal filed by Prince Uche Seconds, the PDP would be embarking upon a collision course with the court if it proceeds to hold the National
Convention before the hearing and determination of the Application.

“10. Should such contumacious conduct of holding the National Convention before the hearing and determination of the Application be embarked upon by the Party, however, we shall not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law against all national officers of the Party that
are responsible for such conduct of contempt of court.

“11. Quite apart from the fact that such contumacious conduct would impinge on the integrity of the Party, we would on our part, swiftly take steps to invoke the jurisdiction of the
court to nullify any decision, action or step taken at such Convention.

“We trust that you will wisely advise the Peoples’ Democratic Party and its officers in this regard.”
