100-Level Student Of Rivers Varsity Dies While Swimming With Friends

A student of the Rivers State University (RSUT) has been reported dead.

The deceased, whose name was simply given as Emmanuel, reportedly drowned in the University of Port Harcourt’s swimming pool while hanging out with his friends.

Naija News learnt that the 100-level student went with his buddies to swim at the Olympic-size swimming pool in the Sports Complex, Abuja Campus of the University, but drowned and could not be rescued by his three friends at the pool.

The school management, Naija News learnt, has placed a ban on pleasure swimming in the facility.

Speaking on the sorrowful event, the spokesman for the university, Sam Kpenu, confirmed that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Police officers from Choba Station are said to have visited the scene and arrested two of Emmanuel’s friends for questioning.

In reaction to the incident in another statement, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari George says the swimming pool would only be open for professional uses.

He said: “We wish to inform all staff and students that the University of Port Harcourt swimming pool is an Olympic size swimming pool and henceforth we are placing a ban on pleasure swimming in the pool. 

“Kindly bear with us as this is done to forestall further unfortunate incidents as it happened Sunday 12th September 2021. We lost a student of Rivers State University who came to swim for leisure with his three friends.”
