Twitter Gives Update On Discussion With Buhari Govt Over Suspension

Micro-blogging site, Twitter, on Monday stated that discussion with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari over its ban in Nigeria has been respectful and productive.

Twitter stated that talks with the Buhari government to restore it’s services in Nigeria is still ongoing.

In a statement to Peoples Gazette, Twitter said: “Discussions with the Nigerian government have been respectful and productive – we look forward to seeing the service restored very soon.

“We continue to engage with the Nigerian government to discuss why Twitter has been blocked and ways to resolve the matter.

“We are committed to charting a path forward to the restoration of Twitter for everyone in Nigeria.”

Naija News recalls that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, had on July 4th announced the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

The government’s declaration came after the owners of the microblogging platform deleted tweets made by the Nigerian President.

President Buhari had in the deleted post warned the south eastern people of Nigeria, predominantly Igbo people, of a potential repeat of the 1967 Biafran Civil War due to the insurgency in Southeastern Nigeria.

The Nigerian government claimed that the deletion of the President’s tweets factored into their decision but it was ultimately based on a litany of problems with the social media platform in Nigeria, where misinformation and fake news spread through it have had real world violent consequences.

Although the ban placed on the micro-blogging site was widely condemned by the international community, the Buhari administration refused to lift the suspension until Twitter agree to meet certain criteria.
