An indigene of Gombe State, Umar Abubakar has said even if he was opportune to get married, the marriage will not last long.

The 31-year-old man had attempted suicide last week Sunday, Naija News understands.

Abubakar is alleged to have climbed a telecommunications mast in an attempt to protest his parents’ failure to get him a wife.

A claim he later debunked during an exclusive interview with journalist, Chima Azubuike.

Narrating what triggered his ridiculous actions, Abubakar said some people were pursuing him and in a bid to escape from them, he climbed the telecommunication mast.

He said he took it upon himself to climb to the highest height of the mast to ensure that those pursuing him will not be able to reach him.

Reports according to The Punch had claimed that Abubakar demanded to see Gombe State Governor as condition for him not to commit suicide.

The young man who claimed he is into bricklaying work and other menial jobs for survival, explained to the reporter that he truly wanted to see the Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, because he wanted to be happy.

“I also asked for cigarette and food as conditions to come down from the mast,” Abubakar said.

Telling about his educational background, Abubakar said: “Yes, I went to school up to secondary level. I attended Pilot Secondary School. I was very good at Biology and Chemistry. I wanted to become a medical doctor.

When asked why on why he attempted the suicide: Abubakar said “All I can remember is that some people were pursuing me and in a bid to escape from them I climbed the telecommunication mast. I had to climb to the highest point to ensure that those pursuing me would not be able to get me.  It was a desperate moment and I needed safety and peace, so, I had to climb to the height I was convinced those people would not be able to attempt.

“What I really considered was climbing to the highest point of the mast and then fall down and die.

“I was tired of everything and wanted to just end it by climbing the telecommunication mast and die.”

When asked about how he feels to have been taken to the psychiatric department at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital after he was brought down from the mast, Abubakar said: “I feel happy, hopefully I will be okay.

Azubuike asked; Is it true that your condition is as a result of substance abuse?

All I know is that what I take doesn’t have the capacity to cause me mental challenges,” Abubakar responded.

I was first admitted in 2008.
I was brought here then but I stopped coming for checkup and buy drugs due to lack of money,” Abubakar added.
