Gunmen kidnap Nelson Effiong

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of Senator Nelson Effiong by some unknown gunmen.

Addressing newsmen on Monday, the spokesperson of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, SP Odiko Macdon said the gunmen kidnapped the lawmaker at about 10pm on Sunday, 5th September 2021.

As earlier reported by Naija News, Effiong is the immediate past Senator that represented Akwa Ibom South in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

He was abducted by a gang of armed men at a lounge on Sunday evening.

Confirming the development, Police vowed that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring the safe return of the former lawmaker while the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“We have received that sad report of the kidnap of the Senator.”

“He was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at a popular drinking spot on Oron Road, Uyo.”

“The Commissioner of Police Andrew Amiengheme is miffed about it and have promised to spare no resources in ensuring his safe rescue and perpetrators brought to book,” Macdon said.

Meanwhile, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has vowed not to leave the northwest state as the Nigerian military ramps up its operations against bandit terrorists.

Naija News recalls that the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, had last week directed telecommunication providers to shut down mobile networks in the state in a move to disrupt communication between bandits and their collaborators.

The Zamfara state governor had earlier banned the sale of fuel in Jerry cans, closed all rural filling stations and markets.

Speaking to Deutsche Welle radio, Governor Matawalle said he has chosen to remain and suffer with the people of the state during the period of massive operations launched against terrorists.

According to the Zamfara governor, the blockage placed by his administration on food, fuel, and communication is already forcing bandits to release people in captivity because they can not feed them.
