The presidency on Wednesday reiterated its stand that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is a terrorist organization.

The presidency stated that the proscribed IPOB group led by Nnamdi Kanu has no good intention for the country, further accusing the pro-Biafra group of stockpiling weapons and bombs.

The presidency in a statement signed by the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu added that IPOB is responsible for various attacks in the southeast including the killing of police officers and the destruction of many public and private buildings.

Naija News reports that the statement on Wednesday is targeted majorly at Amnesty International which was accused by the presidency of providing support for IPOB under the umbrella of humanitarian and rights activities.

“IPOB murder Nigerian citizens. They kill police officers and military personnel and set government property on fire.”

“Now, they have amassed a substantial stockpile of weapons and bombs across the country. Were this group in a western country, you would not expect to hear Amnesty’s full-throated defence of their actions.”

“Instead, there would be silence or mealy-mouthed justification of western governments’ action to check the spread of “terrorism,” the statement reads in part.

The latest declaration syncs with a recent publication by this online news platform which reported that the presidency has described members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as terrorists.

The presidency in a statement on Sunday signed by the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu said the group and its members are responsible for acts of terrorism in the southeast region of the country.

It blamed them for the attacks on police stations and other residents in the region, adding that the group is only hiding under the umbrella of struggling for freedom to perpetrate its acts of terrorism.

Shehu also added that some foreign media organizations, as well as politicians, have been hoodwinked into believing IPOB are only agitators demanding a sovereign Biafra.

Meanwhile, the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has fixed September 14 for another sit-at-home.

Naija News reports that the new sit-at-home is to remember those allegedly killed in Afaraukwu, Abia State in 2018 by Nigerian soldiers.

The pro-Biafra group accused soldiers of desecrating the traditional stool of Afaraikwu in 2018.
