French international andManchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been remanded in prison by a British court on Friday over alleged rape and assault.

Naija News reports that the French defender has been suspended by Man City, was earlier charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The 27-year-old appeared at Chester Magistrates’ Court in northwest England to face accusations brought by three complainants.

The France international wore a red hoodie and black tracksuit bottoms as he stood in the dock to hear the charges brought against him.

Judge Jack McGarva referred the case to Chester Crown Court, where the footballer is due to appear on September 10.

City’s Mendy is alleged to have attacked some females, one aged under 18, at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire.

The incidents were alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021.

Cheshire Police had released a statement that read: “The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorized Cheshire Constabulary to charge a man in connection with allegations of sexual assault.

“Benjamin Mendy, aged 27, has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021.

“Mendy, of Prestbury, has been remanded in police custody and is set to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Friday 27 August.

“Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are live and that he has a right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice ongoing proceedings.”
