EDITORIAL: That ASUU May Not Strike Again

We can only imagine the anxiety that gripped the longsuffering students of Nigeria’s public universities when they read the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) early this week warning that the extant industrial peace in schools may be ruptured again any time from the end of August.

They will no doubt be crestfallen over the likelihood of their academic calendar being disrupted again after last year’s mother-of-all strikes which kept them at home from March 23 until December 23 when the strike was conditionally suspended. With some universities losing an entire academic year to the protracted strike, it’s clear that the students and their parents are yet to recover from the impact. Should they then undergo this harrowing experience again?

President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf, has tied the knot with the 20-year-old daughter of the Emir of Bichi, Zarah Ado Bayero.

Their wedding Fathia held as scheduled on Friday, August 20 at the Emir’s Palace in Bichi, Kano.

According to BBC Hausa, the dowry paid for Zahra is N500,000.

Naija News reports that President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in Kano for the wedding ceremony of his son Yusuf and Zahra, the daughter of the Emir of Bichi, Alhaji Nasir Bayero.

President Buhari Makes Fresh Appointments, Returns Oloyede As JAMB Registrar (Full List)

The reappointment of Professor Ishaq Oloyede as the Registrar/Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) by President Muhammadu Buhari has been confirmed.

The appointment for another term of five years was confirmed in a statement on Friday by the Director, Press and Public Affairs, Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong.

The statement also disclosed the President also reappointed Prof Abubakar Rasheed as Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission(NUC) for another five years and Hamid Bobboyi as Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission(UBEC) for a second term of four years.

Nigerians To Benefit As NNPC Finally Unlocks OML 11 Oil And Gas Reserves

Following the Appeal Court judgment which affirmed its operatorship of the Oil Mining License 11 (OML 11), the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) yesterday expressed preparedness to unlock the oil and gas reserves the block offers for the benefit of all Nigerians.

PIA: What We Will Do To Buhari, Sylva In Niger Delta – Ijaw Youth Threaten

The Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) has slammed persona non grata on the Minister of Petroleum, President Muhamammdu Buhari, and his Minister of State, Timipre Sylva, who is a former governor of Bayelsa State, over the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

The Ijaw youth drawn from six states in the Niger Delta region said the duo were no longer welcomed in the region for their role in the passage and signing of the Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB) into law.

Their stance differs from that of the Artisanal Fishermen Association of Nigeria (ARFAN) in the Niger Delta who recently commended Buhari for signing the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) into law, stressing that the new law has a lot of promises for the Niger Delta region.

EFCC Seals Off Former Governor Kwankwaso’s Property

The property belonging to the former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has been sealed off by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The anti-graft agency is investigating the former lawmaker representing Kano Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly over an alleged diversion of local government funds amounting to N3.08billion.

Barrister Mustapha Danjuma, counsel to Engineer Abubakar Maisha’ani and Alhaji Najumai Garba Kobo, in a petition had alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party chieftain received contributions of N70 million from each of the 44 local government councils (ttotallingN3.08billion) towards his presidential primary in 2015.

Jos Killing: ‘Your Comment Provocative’ – CAN Slams Presidency

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has tackled the Presidency over its reaction to the recent killing of 22 travelers in Jos, Plateau State.

Presidential Spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, had in a statement claimed that there was a religious motive behind the incident, saying it was a pre-arranged assault on the people of a particular faith.

But CAN, in a harsh statement, described comments by Shehu on the Jos attack as “provocative and unacceptable”, complaining that the Presidency was wrong in tagging the crime as religious.

FG Gives Update On Lifting Twitter Suspension

The Federal Government says it is getting closer to an agreement with Twitter to lift the suspension imposed on the micro-blogging site in Nigeria.

Naija News reported that the Nigerian government on June 4 announced the indefinite suspension of Twitter operations in the country.

Speaking with heads of global media companies on Friday in Washington DC, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the government is doing its best to lift the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

Polaris Bank Refunds ₦20 Million Stolen By Top Bank Staff

Ajibola Sanusi, an account holder with Polaris Bank, has had his money refunded to him after it was stolen.

Naija News reports that details had emerged online on how a worker in the bank had transferred money from Sanusi’s account without his consent.

Going through his account statement, he discovered that a total of ₦19,732,190 was stolen by a top employee of the bank between July 5 and 12.
