Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arizabalaga was the hero of the night as Chelsea defeated Villarreal to win the 2021 UEFA Super Cup.

Naija News reports that victory on Wednesday night gave The Blues their first UEFA Super Cup win since 1998.

The London based club had looked on course for the trophy after taking the lead early in the first half from a Hakim Ziyech goal.

But Villarreal responded in the second half when Spaniard, Gerard Moreno pulled them back into the game.

Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic were guilty of spurning good chances in extra time as Chelsea looked for a way to win it before it goes to penalties.

Sensing that the game would definitely be won via penalties, The Blues’ Thomas Tuchel removed first choice goalkeeper Mendy and brought in Arizabalaga.

That bold move paid off as the Spanish goalkeeper who had lost his place to the Congolese saved two penalties – including the last from captain Raul Albiol – to hand Chelsea the trophy ahead of the 2021/2022 football season.
