2022 World Cup: Europe To Use VAR In Qualifier Matches – UEFA

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Europe, UEFA has revealed that Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be used during matches.

Naija News understands that the qualifiers will commence from September 2022.

In a statement released via its website on Thursday, August 5, the continental football ruling body said standards would be maintained in the qualifiers for Qatar.

The light-touch use of VAR at the just concluded Euro 2020 was widely praised. Unlike the Euros, where the VARs were based away from the matches at UEFA’s Nyon headquarters in Switzerland, the technology will be implemented on-site at the stadium hosting each qualifier, Naija News understands.

UEFA had hoped to introduce VAR into its national team qualifying competitions sooner, but the logistical difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic forced it to delay.

Meanwhile, Italian professional football club, Inter Milan, has refused £85m offered by Chelsea to let go of its forward, Romelu Lukaku.
