EFCC Detain, Grill Bukola Saraki

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  on Saturday questioned a former president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki.

It was gathered that the interrogation is over alleged misappropriation of public funds and money laundering.

Saraki, who arrived at the EFCC office around 2pm today, is still being interrogated presently.

A senior official confirmed that the former Kwara State governor is in custody.

When Naija News reached out to Olu Onemola, an aide to Saraki on New Media, he promised to get back with information.

The former Kwara governor had earlier in the day attended the wedding of the daughter of Senator Shaba Lafiagi, Fatimah, in Abuja.

This online news platform gathered that Saraki had gone to the EFCC headquarters after the wedding.

Saraki served as a two-term governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011.

He also served as president of the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2019.

Saraki is reportedly being investigated over alleged theft and laundering of public funds using a network of cronies and proxy companies.

The suspected proxies, who executed purported contracts for Kwara State under Saraki, allegedly made returns, for many years, to the former governor, forming an organised network of money flow.

The funds involved were huge, running into hundreds of millions in naira and hundreds of thousands in foreign currencies at various times, sources claimed.

Anti-graft investigators have obtained a list of the proxy companies involved and analysed a pattern of suspicious transactions between them and Saraki.

This is coming days after a former Governor of Nasarawa State, Tanko Al-Makura and his wife, Mairo Al-Makura were detained and questioned by the EFCC.

Sources disclosed that the duo honoured the invitation extended to them by the commission.

One of the sources disclosed that the couple were detained when the operatives of EFCC demanded some explanations from them about the finances of the state but they were unable to answer.
