Sunday Igboho Regains Fredom In Benin, Set To Return To Nigeria

One of the five lawyers representing Sunday Adeyemo better known as Sunday Igboho, Ibrahim Salami has said keeping the agitator in Benin is better than returning him back to Nigeria.

Naija News reports that Sunday Igboho was on Monday arrested In Benin Republic alongside his wife, Ropo, which trying to board a flight to Germany.

The Court D’Apeal in Cotonou, Benin Republic, had on Thursday adjourned the trial of Sunday Igboho till Monday, July 26.

This was to allow the Nigerian Government to file extradition charges and bring up whatever evidence they may have.

The court however ordered the immediate release of Ropo, a German citizen, and ordered the return of her passport.

Speaking in an interview with BBC on Saturday, Salami said he and other lawyers will never let Igboho get extradited to Nigeria.

The lawyer said “What is important for us, what is paramount, is to never never never allow for the extradition of Sunday Igboho to Nigeria.

“With all that happened in his house, and how the army is threatening him, allowing for his extradition will be sending him home to death.

“Rather than do that, it would be better to keep him in Benin and kill him, than to let him go to Nigeria to be slaughtered like an animal. That has been our struggle and agitation here in Benin.”

Salami, who is also a professor at a University in Benin, pointed out that it would be difficult for Igboho to be extradited to Nigeria because there is no extradition treaty or accord between both countries.

“For someone to be extradited from one country to another, there must be a law between both countries, we call it accord for extradition. That accord does not exist between both countries.

“To extradite him will be difficult, but in politics, we cant say. But by law, there is no extradition accord between Nigeria and Benin,” he said.
