Igboho’s Arrest: Yoruba Nation Agitators Protest In Ibadan, Cotonou

Dozens of Yoruba Nation agitators took the streets of Ibadan to protest the arrest of their leader, Sunday Adeyemo better known as Sunday Igboho.

Naija News had earlier reported that Sunday Igboho was arrested at Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport with his wife on their way to Germany on Monday night.

Igboho is being held and set to be extradited to Nigeria after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS) or arms stockpiling.

The protesters gathered in front of Igboho’s house in the Soka area of Ibadan from where they took to the streets around 12 noon on Wednesday.

The supporters of the agitator were heard singing the Yoruba Nation anthem and chanting “Igboho Oosa”, “Free Igboho now now”.

The protesters also displayed placards such as: “I stand with Chief Sunday Igboho”; “Sunday Igboho is not a criminal”; “Yoruba wake up” and “Sunday Igboho is fighting for our freedom”

The protesters, who blocked Soka junction road, demanded Igboho’s immediate release, adding that the activist should not be subjected to the treatment he is going through.

One of the protesters said: “Help us ask Buhari and his people; what is the offence of Igboho? He asked Fulani herders killing and raping our people to leave; is that an offence? The federal government under Buhari knows where bandits and Boko Haram leaders are but they ignore them, preferring to use Nigeria resources to kidnap peace loving people and put them in jail.

“This government watched a northern cleric romancing bandits, visiting them in the forest but this government still claims not to know bandits whereabouts.

“We call on our south-west governors and Yoruba monarchs to rise up and fight for the people that put them in position. It is not a crime if someone is asking for an end to oppression. The federal government is pushing too far in the way it is handling the issues of Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu.”

In a related development, some Yoruba people residing in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, protested at the nation’s court where it is believed that an extradition hearing of Igboho will be held.

In a video shared by Igboho’s media aide, Olayomi Koiki, the protesters were seen singing solidarity song and demanding freedom for Igboho.

The protesters noted that they have confidence in the Benin Republic justice system, expressing optimism that Igboho will be freed.
