Senate Begins Screening Of Onochie, Others As INEC Commissioners
The Nigerian Senate has commenced the process of screening Lauretta Onochie as one of the National Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Others to be screened are Professor Mohammed Sani, Professor Kunle Ajayi, Ekiti; Saidu Ahmad, Jigawa; Professor Muhammad Kallah, Katsina; Dr. Baba Bila, North-East, and Professor Sani Adam, North-Central.
The Senate Committee on INEC led by Senator Kabiru Gaya(APC, Kano South) started the screening on Thursday.
However, the nomination of Onochie who is the Special Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari has continued to generate controversy.
Her position as a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) caused the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and some other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to submit a petition against her nomination.
Naija News recalls the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, had last week led other party leaders to the National Assembly to protest Onochie’s nomination and demand the legislators don’t confirm her.
Meanwhile, counsel to the leader of the proscribed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has said his client would be released soon.
Speaking to newsmen, Ejiofor, who had come under attack by security agents in past, stated that he was appointed by God to defend Kanu and IPOB members.
The pro-Biafra agitators’ lawyer urged Biafrans across the world to be patient and prayerful.
