The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed that 136 students in a high school have tested positive for the COVID-19 Delta variant.

Naija News reports that this was made known by the Director-General of the GHS, Patrick Kuma-Aboagye.

He stated that 136 out of 550 samples taken among students in Achimota School came out positive.

According to the GHS boss, three students from the school went to the hospital last month with symptoms of influenza but ended up testing positive for COVID-19.

“Subsequently, other symptomatic students and contacts were identified, listed, and tested for COVID-19. However, the majority of the students, who tested positive, are day students.

“We are doing the strategic testing of day students so that the infection does not spill into the community,’’ he stated.

Ghana first confirmed six cases of COVID-19 Delta variants among passengers arriving in the country on June 22.

Meanwhile, the JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, has blamed the COVID-19 pandemic for the poor performance in the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Oloyede stated this while appearing on a live programme on a Nigerian Television Authority’s tagged “Weekend File”.

According to the JAMB Registrar, this year’s UTME results were poorer than those of three years ago.

The registrar said the COVID-19 pandemic affected the smooth running of the academic calendar.

He said 99.65 per cent scored 120 marks and above out of the possible 400 in 2021as against 99.80 per cent in 2020.
