Buhari Govt Has Spent Over $5bn On Lifting Nigerians Out Of Poverty – Sadiya Farouq

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has spent over $5bn since 2016 on lifting Nigerians out of poverty.

This submission was made by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Farouq.

The Minister noted that the amount is in partial fulfilment of the promise made by the president to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

She added that the various schemes under the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) are targeted at reducing poverty and inequality among Nigerians.

Farouq also affirmed that there is absolute truth in the declaration by President Buhari during his democracy day speech that his government has pulled 7.5million people out of poverty.

“I am happy to report to you that every year since 2016, when NSIP was flagged off, Mr President has approved that $1bn be invested into that sector every year (which aggregated is over $5bn),” she said on Saturday in Yola, during the presentation of letters of engagement and electronic tablets to 248 monitors of the NSIP programme in Adamawa where she was represented by the National Coordinator of NSIP, Dr Umar Bindir.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) has appealed to the United Nations (UN) to intervene in Nigeria’s current situation, adding that the country is on the brink of collapse.

In a letter made available to newsmen on Sunday, NADECO spokesman, Ayo Opadokun, called on the UN to prevent a total breakdown of order in the country.

The letter which was addressed to the Secretary-General, United Nations Organisation (UN), António Guterres, added that Nigeria’s current situation was caused by the “imposed centralist and unitary 1999 Constitution” written by some military cliques.
