The activities of some unknown gunmen who shot sporadically into the air on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, caused anxiety among residents.

It was gathered that the gunmen drove in a minibus around Ogbunabali area of the Rivers State capital in the evening, scaring residents.

The shooting made people around the area scamper for safety with some abandoning their vehicles on the road, which eventually resulted in a traffic jam around the area and adjourning streets, Naija News gathered.

A source who reportedly witnessed the incident was quoted by the Nation as saying: “Many drivers abandoned their vehicles and escaped while others tried to reverse to where they were coming from.

“The whole confusion caused serious traffic on all adjoining roads to the area my including the Port Harcourt – Aba expressway around the Garrison flyover.

“At one point, the gunmen got down from their bus off the main Ogbunabali street to try to clear the traffic but had to turn back after they could not Wade through the maze of abandoned vehicles”.

The Rivers Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, promised to verify the incident.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has confirmed a fierce engagement between its troops and terrorists belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

A statement on Wednesday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Mohammed Yerima said the troops clashed with the terrorists on Tuesday when they attempted to infiltrate Dikwa town of Borno.
