Nnamdi Kanu Replies Northern Elders Over Comment On Biafra

Good day, Nigeria, welcome to Naija News roundup of Biafra/IPOB news headlines for today Monday, June 7th, 2021.

Below is a roundup of top stories on Biafra, IPOB, ESN, Nnamdi Kanu and other pro-Biafra groups:

1. Police Kill Top IPOB/ESN Commander In Imo State

A top commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN) has been killed in Imo State by security operatives.

The commander, identified as Joseph Uka Nnachi alias Dragon was killed when he and some others attempted to attack the Imo State Police headquarters but were repelled by security operatives.

According to the Imo State Police spokesperson, Bala Elkana, six of the attackers including Dragon were killed by the security operatives.

2. Caution IPOB To Avoid Another Biafra War – NEF To Igbo Leaders

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has urged Igbo leaders to prevail on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to stop attacks in order to avoid another war in the country.

Naija News reports that NEF stated this on Monday while briefing journalists after a closed-door meeting in Abuja.

Speaking to newsmen, NEF spokesperson, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, stated that the silence of Igbo leaders is no longer golden in the face of killings of Northerners in the region.

3. Biafra: UK Reveals Fresh Update On Granting Asylum To IPOB Members

The United Kingdom has rejected a blanket ban on members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) who apply for asylum.

According to the Head of Communications, British High Commission in Nigeria, Mr. Dean Hurlock, the UK stated that all applications will be considered on their individual merit.

In a chat with The PUNCH on whether IPOB is qualified for asylum, Hurlock said applications by all Nigerian nationals would be treated on their individual merit.

4. Allow Igbo To Have Biafra, CNG Tells Buhari, Others

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to allow the people of the South-East to have Biafra.

In a letter signed by the chairman of its Board of Trustees, Nastura Shariff, on Sunday, the coalition asked the Igbo to have their way to avert a civil war and bloodshed.

The coalition also urged northern leaders to get the Nigerian state and other critical stakeholders to accept the reality.

It alleged that the Igbo had, for decades, intermittently used the agitation for Biafra to destabilize Nigeria and deny peace to other components of the country.

It stated that the level of anger elicited by the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its sponsors at home and in the diaspora had reached β€œthe inevitable point where the Igbos must be separated from Nigeria by invoking the relevant statutes on self-determination entrenched in various international conventions and treaties to which Nigeria is a signatory.”
