Nigeria’s Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has called on the Armed Forces to provide security for the construction of the railway line which will begin soon.

The Federal Government plans to begin construction of long-distance railways from Kaduna to Kano, Kano to Maradi and Maiduguri to Port Harcourt.

Amaechi made the call on Friday during a visit to the Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Farouk Yahaya, at his office in Abuja.

He said the construction of the Kaduna to Kano line was scheduled to begin sometime this month while the Kano to Maradi and Maiduguri to Port Harcourt line would be launched in July.

He said it had to seek help from the military as a result of the security challenges facing the country believing that the presence of the military will boost the morale of the workers and give the expatriates confidence that there is security in Nigeria.

Responding, the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Yahaya commended the minister for the visit.

He assured him that the force was ready to provide the necessary assistance for the successful construction of railway lines across the country.
