House Of Reps Receives Proposal To Change Nigeria's Name To UAR

Nigerian celebrities such as Timi Dakolo, Mercy Aigbe, Naira Marley, Tacha, others have reacted hours after the House of Representatives reportedly received a proposal suggesting the name of Nigeria to be changed to United African Republic or United Alkebulan Republic.

Naija News reports that a tax consultant, identified as Adeleye Jokotoye, submitted the proposal to the committee at the South West Zonal Public Hearing in Lagos on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

This has however caused a stir on social media as many Nigerians including celebrities took to the platform to express their opinions concerning the proposal.

@Mercy Aigbe wrote; ”So I hear some people are proposing that Nigeria should be given a new name! Abeg is the name issue? Abi will change the name solve our numerous problems??? Walai I am tired of these our stupid lawmakers, exasperated with the system. Me and my Thots! This country hen.”

Timi Dakolo wrote on Twitter; “Now that you people are planning to change Nigeria’s name to United African Republic, What will I do with My Great nation song?! Una Dey stress me too much.”

@Naira Marley wrote; “Omo Na me go sing the new national Anthem for UAR”

@Lilian Esoro wrote; “UAR really??? How did we get here ?? It’s not really about the name! Will the consititutuion and dictators change? Lord Lugard and Flora Shaw … I hope you’re happy now… SMH”
