Troops Kill Gun Runners Trying To Smuggle Weapons Into Nigeria From Niger Republic

Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralized three gunrunners attempting to smuggle weapons into Nigeria from Niger Republic through the Sabo Birni border town of Sokoto State.

According to information made available to Naija News in a statement on Wednesday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Mohammed Yerima, the gunrunners were intercepted on Tuesday, June 1.

The statement added that the troops who intercepted them around 11pm in the night, moved based on credible intelligence on their operation.

Items recovered during the operation include RPG bombs and RPG chargers, machine gun, AK47 assault rifle and other weapons and ammunition.

The Army statement reads: “Nigerian Army troops operating around Sabo Birni border town of Sokoto State neutralized 3 gunrunners and recovered weapons on 1 June 2021.”

“This was made possible following a credible information of gunrunners moving weapons on foot from Niger Republic into Nigeria around 11pm.”

“The highly vigilant troops mounted a successful ambush along the suspected route close to Garin Naimaimai Village and neutralized the 3 gunrunners.”

“Items recovered include RPG bombs and RPG chargers, machine gun, AK47 assault rifle, and other accessories as well as different calibre of assorted ammunition.”

“The Chief of Army Staff Maj Gen Faruk Yahaya commended the efforts of the troops and urged them to sustain operational tempo by dominating all the illegal routes around the border areas with Niger Republic to frustrate any movement of weapons and ammunition into the country.”

Meanwhile, the federal government of Nigeria has declared that social media giant, Twitter has not been fair to the country.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed made the submission on Wednesday in his reaction to the decision of the social media platform to delete President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial tweet.
