Unknown gunmen Sunday attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a police divisional station in Akwa, Anambra.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the gunmen attacked in three Hilux trucks at about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.

An eyewitness stated that the gunmen shot into the air close to one hour at the station before proceeding to the INEC office.

According to the source, before proceeding to INEC, the gunmen drove to Aroma junction. They shot in the air for about 10 minutes, making residents scamper for safety before they headed down to INEC.

He added that there was a likelihood of damage at both institutions but could not confirm if the gunmen killed anyone.

“I saw flames of fire going up from the police station and INEC offices. But I cannot say whether people were killed or not because I did not go closer,” said the source.

The attack was later confirmed by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra, Nkwachukwu Orji.

“I need to get a clear picture of what happened in my office before I can speak”, he said.
