Nigerian Military Takes Fresh Action As Chad President Is Shot Dead

The Nigerian Military has raised its alert level across all formations as an immediate response to the killing of Chad President Idriss Déby by terrorists.

It will be recalled that the national army of Chad revealed that President Deby who was newly re-elected has died of wounds he received while commanding his army in battles against rebels in the north.

68-year-old Deby had earlier won his sixth term in office in the latest provisional results on Monday by 79.3% and looked set for a sixth term of five years as the country’s president.

According to the army spokesperson, Général Azem Bemrandoua Agouna, the military had been pushed back by a column of insurgents who were advancing on the capital, N’Djamena.

Déby was expected to give a victory speech after receiving the provisional results, but opted instead to visit Chadian soldiers on the front lines, said his campaign director Mahamat Zen Bada.

In an immediate reaction to happenings in the neighbouring country of Chad, a security source told HumAngle that the Nigerian military has raised its alert level in preparation for a possible escalation of crisis in the region.

The source also added that increased surveillance is to be expected along the Nigerian border with Chad which is estimated at about 85 kilometers in length.

Meanwhile, Naija News reports that Déby’s son, Mahamat Idriss Déby, 37 who is a four-star general, has been announced interim President by a transitional military council.

The government and national assembly were also dissolved while a curfew was imposed, and Chad’s borders were shut.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has declared that the anti-graft agency can’t fight corruption alone.

This is as he declared that EFCC belongs to all Nigerians and all stakeholders must join hands with the commission to fight corruption in the country.

Bawa made the submission on Monday when he hosted members of a civil society organization, Civil Society Coalition for Transparency and Good Governance, at the Commission’s headquarters, Abuja.

According to a statement dated April 19 and made available to Naija News by the EFCC media and publicity, Bawa urged everyone to join the fight against corruption as Nigeria is the only country we have.
