Some leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Nigeria have started jostling for the position of the party leadership

The APC has been embroiled in internal strife for a long time, culminating in the removal of its former chairman Adams Oshiomhole and the formation of an interim committee headed by Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni.

The party is expected to hold its national convention in June to elect new leaders.

Alhaji Mustapha Salihu, a former vice-chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, is the latest person to express interest in running for the party’s presidency.

He told the BBC that it was time for the party’s younger leaders to step up their efforts to give young people a chance to win the 2023 general election.

Although the APC has not yet decided which zone to hand over its leadership, its children from each constituency have already started showing interest, especially former governors.

Former Zamfara State governor Abdul’aziz Yari, from northwestern Nigeria, is leading the party’s bid for the chairmanship, and in a recent interview with BBC Hausa, said he had run for the presidency. the end of the radar.

From the North East, there is also former Borno State governor Kashim Shettima, who is also seen as a keen candidate for the party’s chairmanship despite being the incumbent senator.

In the north-central state, former Nassarawa State Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura, who is also the incumbent senator, is among those reportedly vying to become APC’s national chairman.

Meanwhile, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni is chairing the party’s interim committee to convene its national convention, where new leaders will be elected.

The Director-General of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Salihu Lukman, has said that failure to organise the national convention of the All Progressives Congres in June would spell doom for the party.

The tenure of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee’s led by Governor Mai Mala Buni would end in June when a national convention is expected to hold.
