The Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle has described the appointment of Usman Alkali Baba as the new Inspector-General of Police as a step in the right direction.

Matawalle in a statement on Tuesday through his Director-General Media and Publicity, Yusuf Idris Gusau congratulated Baba on his appointment.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, fired Mohammed Adamu as the IGP and appointed Usman Alkali Baba in his place.

Reacting to the development, Governor Matawalle charged the new police boss to give attention to the general insecurity in Nigeria and also the peculiarities of Zamfara State.

While wishing the new IGP success in his new role, the Zamafara State Governor expressed optimism that his appointment will “inject new life, innovation and focus in the Nigerian Police especially at these trying times of different forms of security challenges.”

“We are sure that President Muhammadu Buhari and the federal government have high regards and confidence in the new appointee to effectively pilot the affairs of the Nigerian police and wish him success in the tasks ahead,” the governor noted.

Similarly, Matawalle congratulated the outgone IGP Mohammed Adamu and wished him well in future endeavours of life.

He noted that Adamu has done his best during his tenure and particularly appreciated him for the support and commitment in fighting armed bandits, cattle rustlers, kidnappers and other heinous crimes in Zamfara State.

Meanwhile, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday, decorated Usman Alkali Baba with his new rank as the Inspector-General of Police.

The decoration was done at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, Naija News understands.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, approved the appointment of Baba as the new acting Inspector-General of Police to take over from Mohammed Adamu.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi conveyed the decision of the president to the public while addressing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He noted that the appointment was with immediate effect.

Until his appointment, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba was a Deputy Inspector-General, DIG of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Force Headquarters.
