President Muhammadu Buhari sits with the President of the Nigerian Senate Ahmad Lawan at the State House, Abuja on Monday, March 29, 2021.

President Buhari plans to submit a supplementary budget to the National Assembly for the purchase of security equipment and the prevention of COVID-19.

Buhari made the remarks during a meeting with Senate President Ahmad Lawan and the speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on Monday.

Naija News has learned that no funds have been set aside for purchases in the 2021 Finance Act adopted in December by the National Assembly

Ahmad Lawan stated that the Legislature and the Executive believe that the supplementary budget should be made to address the security challenges posed by COVID-19.

On tackling the security crisis, Ahmad Lawan said the money would be spent on arms and other military equipment.

He said, “You know, it’s one government where the executive and legislature are working together and we have come to meet with Mr. President, to discuss issues of serious national concern. And one of those issues is the issue of the supplementary budget. Both executive and legislative arms believe that we should have a supplementary budget to provide for funding of the COVID-19 vaccination in Nigeria, as well as the security, providing more resources and platforms to our security agencies.

“And today, I’m sure in Nigeria, there are no more grave issues than COVID-19 and the security situation in the country. And I want to take this opportunity to say that the security situation is gradually improving. And I’m sure that when we will give more resources to our security agencies, we will see an even faster recovery of our situation.’’

He also noted that the National Assembly would approve the Petroleum Bill (PIB) bill “by the end of April or mid-May.”
