Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has accused lawmakers in the National Assembly of not representing the interest of their people and also contributing to the security issues in Nigeria.

Gumi in his statement on Wednesday said the lawmakers are not listening to the plights of their people who voted them into office.

The cleric stated this while speaking at a Zoom conference organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.

He said “No good representation in the legislation. The problems of insecurity cannot be tackled by the legislation. The lawmakers are not good representatives of the people.”

Gumi noted that the people are suffering and need to be heard and this is why he has been meeting with bandits to listen to them and give them a new orientation.

“Do we have credible legislators in Nigeria? How did they get into their party? Until we begin to vote credible leaders into the legislative arm of the government, the problems of insecurity cannot be solved.”

“Legislation cannot tackle insecurity. Listening to the grievances of the people at the grass-root level is very important which our legislators have neglected. And this is what I’m doing.”

“We are talking about the legislation. What legislation are we talking about, when people are not called and listened to?”

The cleric also called for community policing but pleaded with state governors not to abuse the development to suppress people.

“The state police with the supervision of the federal police will be needed but in a way that will not be used by the governors to suppress the people.”
